Bute Forest

Bute Forest

Our community-owned forest is located at the north end of the Isle of Bute, near to the Colintraive-Rhubodach ferry terminal and is split into two main areas: Moss Wood, where we host the majority of our community events and Balnakailly Wood which includes areas of ancient woodland and an area of protected special scientific interest.

There’s plenty to do and see here at our forest, including our popular poetry trail. If you are a nature lover then you can see a variety of plants, animals, insects, fungi and protected bird species such as the wood warbler. If you are very lucky you might even spot one of our red squirrels! Or if you're more into history you can visit interesting archaeological sites including the remains of charcoal burning platforms and abandoned and ruined farmsteads which reflect the forest’s rich past. If you take the Balnakailly Loop walk up to the WWII decoy village bunker you can also admire the spectacular view over the Burnt Isles below.

There's plenty to do

We hold regular events for the local community and if you want to truly immerse yourself in our magical woodland, you can book one of our Off-Grid Huts for a unique forest stay! We also offer mountain bikes if you would rather explore on wheels! More info on our website.
